Nietzsche Friedrich – Ungewitter (for voice and guitar)
This brooding and foreboding song for piano and medium voice tells the story of a king standing on top of his castle, seeing a huge storm approach (the title means “Storm”), and contemplating his own helplessness before it.
On high castle peaks
The old king stood
And looked over darkly
The dark, cloudy land
The storm was approaching
Up with storm force
He supported his right hand
On the pommel of his sword
The left has sunk
The golden scepter does
Still held on the dark brow
The heavy golden crown
Then his lover dragged him
Quietly on the hem of the coat:
You loved me once
You hardly love me yet?
What love and desire and love?
Let go, you sweet figure!
The storm is approaching
Up with the force of the storm
I'm on Burgeszinnen
Not king with sword and crown
I am of outraged times
Powerless, fearful son
What love and desire and love?
Let go, you sweet figure!
The storm is approaching
Up with the force of the storm
