LYRICS (by Machado de Assis, Brazil’s greatest novel author)

No arvoredo sussurra o vendaval do outono

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

The autumn gale whispers in the grove and
Throws the leaves to the ground, where there is no bloom,
And I contemplate this sad abandonment without pain.
Only I saw their birth, only I see them fall,
Like the dark mountain, slim and frightful,
That darkens the valley when the sun descends.
This mountain of the soul, this loving sadness
Also fills my whole being with an unknown shadow.
The winter turns the water into hard rock,
However a ray of summer can turn the rock into water.
Come, o sun, come, take your throne at the heights.
See if you can melt my sad heart.
