Rodrigo Joaquin – Ecos de Sefarad
Serves as a homage to Sephardic (Sefarad refers to the historical Jewish communities of the Iberian Peninsula) musical and cultural heritage, particularly evoking the traditions of Spain’s Jewish past before the 1492 expulsion.
The work is based on or inspired by the traditional Sephardic song “Los Bilbilicos” (also known as “Los Bilbilicos” or “The Nightingales”), a well-known Ladino folk melody.
It was one of Rodrigo’s very last compositions for solo guitar (some sources describe it as the last one he wrote for the instrument), and it forms part of a pair of small pieces from that period.
